The story of Most Blessed Sacrament Parish began in 1937, a time when Louisville was still recovering from the Ohio River flood and the hardships of the Great Depression. Despite these challenges, a small group of faithful Catholics from St. Helen and Holy Name parishes dreamed of building a new Catholic community in the area.
The first parish Mass was celebrated in April 1937 in a rented Baptist church building on Woodruff Avenue. Within a year, the parish had constructed its first combined school-and-church building, where Mass was held in the basement while classrooms were completed above. The parish school opened in 1937 under the leadership of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, later joined by the Ursuline Sisters from 1972–1987.
In 1962, the current church was built and dedicated, giving the growing parish a permanent spiritual home. Over the years, parish life has continued to flourish with new additions, including a renovated altar in 1995 and the opening of Pioneer Hall in 1998.
Education has always been central to parish life. In 2004, Most Blessed Sacrament joined with neighboring parishes to form St. Nicholas Academy, ensuring a strong Catholic school presence in the community. The original school building has since been transformed into housing for the elderly, through a partnership with Catholic Charities and the Housing Partnership of Louisville.
From just 60 founding families, Most Blessed Sacrament has grown to a community of more than 550 parishioners. Today, parish life includes vibrant ministries such as RCIA/OCIA, Bible study, religious education, outreach programs, and parish traditions like the annual Apple Tree school supply drive and Angel Tree at Christmas.
For more than 85 years, Most Blessed Sacrament has been a place of worship, service, and community—where faith is nurtured, friendships are formed, and Christ is at the center of it all.
